It is a mystery that one name sometimes designates two different angels:

There is an angel from the choir section of the High Dominions, Saint Nezach, who stands at the top of the corner pillar Almighty God. But the one that applies to us today is:

Saint Nezach,

the tenth of the twelve angels of Word and Answer from the choir section of the Low Dominions. These angels carry God out into creation in twelve different ways:

  • three carry measure, law and truth into the root of all creation,
  • three carry love, justice and the fear of God into the structure,
  • three carry wisdom, beauty and harmony into the blossom, and
  • three carry power, strength and triumph into the fruit of all creation.

Thus they carry God everywhere into all creation and take its response back with them before God’s Throne.

Saint Nezach carries the power of God in the folly of the Cross and in the measure of His hidden, bound love. God will never show His power to impress people, or to force them under His will, as the adversary does. Here lies the difference between the corner pillar: Saint Nezach and the Angel of Word and Answer: Saint Nezach. The latter here serves. He serves like his Lord, Jesus Christ, Who said of Himself: “Behold, I have come as one who serves.”

Saint Nezach is sent over the earth by God, and whoever wants to recognise God’s greatness and power can recognise it a thousandfold. Just as God’s love is bound, however, so that it does not pour out over the earth like a fiery torrent, so too the angel, Saint Nezach, is bound in his power, adapted to serving his Lord.

His eyes are closed, for when God commands them to be opened, a multitude of lightning bolts will probably burst from his eyes and very quickly bring about a decision. He has also restrained his voice so forcibly that only the most sensitive of men can hear it. If he is released, however, the world will be shaken by the battle cry of this angel.

Saint Nezach’s hands are also bound over his mighty sword. May God have mercy on him whom the blade strikes after his shackles are removed! So mighty will this angel be, who now humbly walks the earth teaching mankind that the power of God in this time of human trial lies in service, in sacrifice and in atonement, and in loving, suffering and dying for the sake of God.

He teaches mankind that God usually chooses inconspicuous people, hidden monks, the sick, and children, to show the world, without coercion or bondage, where the power of God proves itself in this time of trial and probation. In times of need, the Holy Church has always sent its greatest inner power, that is, most of its saints, to Heaven.

Prayer: Holy Angel of God’s Power, Saint Nezach, in the folly of the Cross, the mercy of God has sent you to us! Through you we will remain joyful under the burden of the Cross. In the strength of God it will also become our strength, and in the Cross we will triumph like our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
